The articulation of artistic research as a demarcated activity emerged in relation to questions regarding whether artists produce knowledge, and if so, how this knowledge relates to other kinds of knowledge. Artistic research makes space for research in the arts by artists (as opposed to research about the arts by non-artists). Artists working in the field of artistic research are taught to develop a heightened self-reflexivity about their artistic practice, to explicitly position their practice in relation to wider artistic and non-artistic discourses and to expand their knowledge bases into areas that fall outside of the realms of art discourse, but are relevant to their individual artistic practice." - Royal Academy of Art and Royal Conservatoire, The Hague WHAT IS RESEARCH IN ART? Many tasks of discovery in art art directed to a solution for an immediate problem. These studies are most often short experiments to compare which of many possible solutions fits the need best. More generalized experimentation to discover the relationship between an organized field intersecting with apparent chaos, or color dynamics and optical behavioral responses, or any of numerous possible questions which may be approached by the practice of art. The problem artists have in expressing their research to non-artists is the language of complexity. Artists regularly work with numerious complex systems. Investigation In Art Metaphorical thinking is a symbolic referencing system in search of contextual organization. Pattern recognition is a mapping subroutine assisting this task. Spherical thinking is the migration of awareness from line to sphere. The discovery of spheroidal archetypal structure in a spiral orbital path suggests the need for a (Spherical) metaphorical conceptual base. The metaphorical conceptual base is the moveable pattern used to discover similar relationships. The paradigm shift from line to sphere results in the necessity to digest chaos theory, complex systems, orbital relationships, and a point of view, or views. The investigation is gathering the materials needed to comprehend the migration of art to new media and the insights resulting from the voyage on the process of perception and creation. The need for chaos theory is a conclusion that all data may not be comprehended. A sense of pocess is the conciousness of being and the act of doing. The relationship of being the observer and being the observed in the act of becoming. The stated point of view is a place to stand. The unified field may not be perceived without a place to stand where by the leaver of perception may exist. Therefore a model of a unified field must exist as a metaphorical methodology applied to sectors of existence. The relationships of forms in structural dynamic context allows focus to map probabilities of macro structure. As an example, line thinking can make a bomb, spherical thinking can comprehend relativity. The Line Thinkers War. Just as all individuals and groups cling to power line thinkers rail against the hardships of complexity. Even when their method continues to fail dramatically, they revert to an easy path even at the cost of their self destruction. The moste frightening part of spherical thinking to line thinkers is, accountability. What Are The Restraints And Requirements Of The Artist's View? Non verbal core architecture in a seeing context focuses the art experience to a comparative association. See the Sun. The words "See the sun." do not contain the information or reference material necessary to convey the meaning of the sun. However the shared experience of "seeing the sun" conveys the concept of the sun and an agreement on objective perception necessary to contextualize both participants points of view. Art in a similar way does not convey the data necessary to comprehend the art as research but the act of "seeing the art" becomes the delivery of both question and answer. Sometimes the art is difficult for certain individuals to comprehend. A group of paintings called "Haystacks" may seem a series of variations on pleasing color to one individual, while it may seem like a study of light falling on haystacks at different times of day to another. Whether there was research involved may be a subjective interpretation. Perhaps it is better to say there was an investigation in the process. These parts are organized in groups and called by the program. The design is similar to a digital colony. Brett_Y2_3 is a static image built from parts called by the program. It looks as if it might be a single picture. It is not. It is many. Brett_D7 also has many parts. They are separated by space. They are zoomed in to details. The separations are obvious. The parts are obvious. The idea of unity is lost. The movement of parts suggest cycle. Landscape Code and Institution evolve systems of unity interrupted by random insertion, and growth of complexity. Notes explain process. Plaza 1 and Plaza 2 offer Re-Rendering of parts through digital code filtering each image and called by the program by a real time sequencing code. The Big Picture exists in the digital domain.
